The main cast of Ka'is over the years. I do like how from 2005 to 2008, they look pretty much the same, just better-drawn - and then in the past few years half the cast becomes completely unrecognizable. (Especially you, Qassou.) Hurray for Baby Yutaan realizing that variation in body types is hella fun to draw.

Great line-up! I need to do something like this for a new comic project too ^^

Lineups are fun! And it was very useful just sitting down and figuring out everyone's different body types and how they compare to each other.

Ahh, body variation, something I seriously need to spend some special time getting to know.

This is totally incredible, not just in terms in improvement but in development and skill and sheer variety- you just keep blowing me away.

Body variation is fun~! It helps to break characters down into basic shapes or silhouettes, and get more detailed from there. Chira did a nice post on it a while back: [link] . (There's also some excellent posts by other people in her "art advice" tag, as well.)

I am fairly pleased with my progress over the years! (almost... ten years... augh) I was very proud of all of these at the time of drawing them, and I still think the older ones are good for what they are and what I was trying to accomplish. In the first one, I was only just starting to figure out how to vary characters' heights, and I was proud that I managed it without anyone looking too weirdly proportioned. (No more than they were already weirdly proportioned, anyway.) In the second pass, I tried to vary body type a little (fail), but I was focusing more on conveying a character's personality through the way they posed, the way they carried themselves. And I think I did okay! But this last one was all about varying pose, body type, who has thick hair and who has fine hair, how do they stand, how do their faces differ, what relationships do these people have with each other, and how do I show them by drawing a bunch of naked people standing in a line?

And I was pleased to realize, after I finished this most recent lineup, that the characters are doing something I hadn't even thought about while I was drawing it, and hadn't done in any of the other lineups. None of them are posing for the camera. They're only looking at each other, only interacting with each other.

And that made me pretty happy! :)

Wow, thank you. I've only read the first part of it, but it looks like a really interesting post, great ideas.

So you should be!! The change is mind boggling, in your style as well as skill. I...still haven't really gasped varying character's heights. I just occasionally think "so this character is taller than this one? Maybe?" But I've always had horrible perspective and spacial awareness so in my mind certain characters tower unrealistically over others. If I tried to do a lineup like this, I'd end up with some real problems on my hands. Conveying personality is such an important thing, and you do it so well. And although not as much as in the third version, you can definitely see the different body types starting to emerge!

The interactions all look really great. ^^ I hadn't noticed before you said so (which i could blame on how small things are on my phone which is where I first looked at this) but looking again in much closer detail, it really is wonderful seeing how they're all interacting with each other! Helps a lot with conveying their personalities too!

you should be happy. (:

You just gotta keep working on it! Looking at other artists who are good at height variation helps too. And even if you're worried about how doing a lineup will turn out, it can be very useful! And you'll improve every time you work on it. :)

What the hell did you do to Aharon. He changed- but- those are some drastic changes-

:iconyutaan:
Aharon started out as an extremely minor character with no real finalized look; his design changed a lot as I figured out more about his backstory and personality and made him more central to the plot. :) (I also did tweak the design to look more a bit more like Shu, his sister, as her design developed.)

Poor baby lost some things along the way,

Well, yes... but he gained a personality! So that's... something....
