SO HOW ABOUT YOU??? HOW DO YOU MAKE COMPOSITIONS D8 TEACH ME
I actually tried to answer this seriously.
And each time I did I ended up with several hundred (sometimes thousand) words and links to other stuff in my gallery and other artists and some historical context and a discussion of Eastern vs. Western compositions
and I just –
MAYBE I SHOULD MAKE A TUTORIAL? OR A SEPARATE POST?? THIS WOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER TO EXPLAIN WITH PICTURES
AND I AM NOT THAT GOOD AT COMPOSITION ANYWAY??? I HAVE SO MUCH TO LEARN?????
But hell with it, okay, the abridged version of HOW SAM CHEATS AT COMPOSITION is:
Put an element into the top left corner to lead the eye into the image
Use other lines and shadows and colors and stuff in the image to lead the eye around in a spiral
The viewer can now never ever look away because you have trapped their eye in a neverending spiral of death and beauty.
(Bonus points if, in addition to trapping the viewer in this death spiral, you also turn the entire drawing into a giant symbolic cross with the meeting of the two arms directly on the characters' faces, which in composition-speak is screaming JACKPOT HERE LOOK HERE LOOK HOW CLOSE THESE DUMBASSES ARE TO MAKING OUT – as seen in this example.)
