I cut out the shape of the character's body from white Bristol board, which makes a fairly sturdy backing. In areas where skin will show, I color in the proper tone with markers and shade with colored pencil. The faces are drawn the same way, with the features outlined in colored ink. After all that is dry, I glue on the clothing, hair, and any other props that are needed, for example, the cups and steam in this piece.
